Billy Ray Cyrus Reacts to Miley Cyrus Saying He ‘Cried’ Over Song ‘Secrets’

Billy Ray Cyrus is showing his support for daughter Miley Cyrus after she opened up about their relationship in a recent interview.
“Talk about a Sunday Callin !!! Started with @mileycyrus on CBS Sunday Morning. One great song can do more for the soul than a million therapy sessions,” Billy Ray, 64, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, October 5. “I agree! Music Changes Everything!! ?.”
He concluded, “So thankful and grateful to our Almighty Glorious God for all things good after playing baseball with my grandson this morning and feeding the horses. ?♥️.”
Billy Ray set the upload to his and Miley’s track “Butterfly Fly Away,” while sharing a throwback photo of the father-daughter duo.
Miley Cyrus Says Dad Billy Ray 'Cried' When She Gave Him Birthday Song
His upload comes hours after Miley, 32, revealed during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning that Billy Ray “cried” when she gifted him the song “Secrets” for his birthday.
“You know, you don’t see your dad cry a lot. But with me and my dad, we just have always communicated better through music with each other,” Miley said.
When asked if she and Billy Ray are “at peace now with each other” after years of ups and downs, Miley replied, “Yeah.”
Miley released her Something Beautiful album in May, later sharing that “Secrets” was inspired by her, at times, tumultuous relationship with Billy Ray.
Miley Cyrus Says New Song ‘Secrets’ Is a 'Peace Offering’ to Dad Billy Ray
“I wrote this song about my dad, because I wanted him to tell me, even though they were secrets, even though I didn’t really wanna know, I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family,” she said on the “Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky” podcast in June.
Miley continued, “But I wanted him to think that, as a middle child, I’m old enough that I could take some of that you know. And I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place, that I always had the white flag when they came to talk to me.”
Two months later, Billy Ray publicly thanked Miley for her gesture. “For my birthday, Miley gave me the gift of music and wrote me a song called ‘Secrets’ and got my favorite musicians Fleetwood Mac to play on it!” Billy Ray wrote via Instagram at the time. “ I love you Miley ❤️.”
Billy Ray Cyrus Shares Song Daughter Miley Cyrus Wrote for His Birthday
Billy Ray shares Miley with ex-wife Tish Cyrus, whom he was married to for 28 years before their 2022 divorce. After his marriage to Tish, Billy Ray adopted her children Brandi, 38, and Trace 36. The exes also share Braison, 31, and Noah, 25, and Billy Ray is also dad to Christopher, 33, whom he shares with ex Kristin Luckey.
Miley and Billy Ray, who starred on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana together, have not shied away from giving fans a glimpse of their dynamic through the years.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents — because my mom’s really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,” Miley said during a May interview for The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast. “I think I took on some of my mom’s hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”
