Fashion is a great many things, but one thing no one can argue about (ironically) is that it's subjective. I say this because I find skirts a bit boring—usually, that is. My skirt opinions have shifted over the past few seasons as the trends have become more interesting and varied. You could wear a cargo miniskirt one day and a long elegant slip skirt the next, and both styles would be equally relevant.
In case you're overwhelmed by the number of skirt trends to choose from right now, I want to talk about seven that I consider the most prominent this summer. Some have been around for a minute, while others are very fresh. The tennis skirt trend undoubtedly paved the way for more pleated skirt trends, and the one to add to your wardrobe this season is a midi, or knee-length, version if you want to look extra forward.
Pencil skirts get a bad rap as they're typically associated with conservative office wear, but fashion people are styling them in fun ways that look anything but stuffy this season.
Miniskirts are hardly new, but they're still very much around, meaning I couldn't forgo mentioning them. The most 2023 way to wear them is with flat shoes like loafers, ballet flats, or sneakers.
Another trend you're probably used to hearing about is denim maxi skirts. Everyone continues to be obsessed with them, and since they're almost as easy to wear as a pair of jeans, I don't expect that to change anytime soon.
Given how big of a trend cargo pants continue to be, it should be no surprise that cargo skirts are quickly rising in popularity. This is a great style if you want a casual trend that feels fresher than denim skirts.
Full skirts are perhaps the prettiest trend on everyone's radar this season. That said, they're not the easiest to style. My advice is to keep it simple with kitten heels and a fitted top.
Slip skirts come back around every few seasons like clockwork. They'll give your outfit a chic '90s vibe, which is always a good vibe to have.
