George Clooney and Amal Clooney are stepping into the new year by marking a meaningful milestone.

The A-list couple and their 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, have been granted French citizenship, according to a naturalization decree published on Saturday, December 27, via French newspaper Journal Officiel.

It seems to be a welcome change for the pair after George, 64, recently opened up about wanting to raise his children away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

“You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it,” he explained to Esquire in October about wanting to leave Tinseltown behind. “But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

George continued, “I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France — they kind of don’t give a s*** about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

The star also spoke about teaching his kids to get their hands dirty, reflecting on how one of his property’s fences needed a fresh coat of protective oil to protect it from sun damage.

“And at first they’re taking these little, tiny brushstrokes, boop, boop, boop,” he shared. “And I go, Nooo, paint the goddamn fence. And then they go crazy painting the fence and they’re covered with paint and oil and stuff.”

Everything George and Amal Clooney Have Said About Parenting Their Twins

George owns a family home in France with a hundred acres of grapes and twelve hundred olive trees, which they have made their primary residence in addition to an estate in England and a villa in Italy.

“Growing up in Kentucky, all I wanted to do was get away from a farm, get away from that life,” he explained in a February 2025 interview with The New York Times, revealing he’s since had a change of heart. “Now I find myself back in that life. I drive a tractor and all those things.”

The Jay Kelly actor also owns an abode in Kentucky. (He went to high school in Augusta and was born in nearby Lexington).

He and Amal, 47, previously stopped by a hometown staple for his family’s annual reunion and paid a visit to his beloved local bakery, Magee’s, after exchanging vows in Venice, Italy, in September 2014.

“They were fun as a couple!” coowner Russell Dickson told Us Weekly in 2015, revealing Geroge got one of his favorite delights. “They ordered the transparent, that’s his thing, he loves the transparent.”

“His family has been a customer for years, so I kind of half grew up with him always hanging around the bakery. He stops in maybe once a year or so.”
